In a world where models are often disposable- it takes a great level of professionalism and talent for a model to be considered irreplaceable. For our model castings in New York City and Los Angeles- we got the opportunity to meet a new wave of plus-size models eager to make their mark. Models flew in from across the nation at an attempt to make plus-size fashion history with NYFW Plus.
After our castings, we caught up with Plus Model and NYFW Plus Casting Panelist- Priscilla Katerena to get her thoughts on:
What does it take to be successful as a plus-size model”
Tenacity, vision, and faith are all very necessary to excel as a plus-size model. It takes tenacity to create your vision, and to walk daily by faith to see it all materialize in God’s time- without promise.
The three most common mistakes made by aspiring models at casting calls?””
OUTDATED AND UNPROFESSIONAL IMAGES
Most agencies, want models to constantly update their portfolios every 3-6 months. Not having any updated or professional images within your portfolio or on your comp card will murder your modeling career before it even reaches off the ground. It’s so necessary for models to invest time and money into their images.
Wearing too much makeup or the wrong makeup will challenge your opportunities at castings. An example of this would be too much black eyeliner and black lipstick. Unless specified by the producer to wear this specific makeup-DON’T DO IT!
Unflattering clothing has been known to ruin plenty of modeling opportunities. I have one go to dress for all my runway castings. It hugs all my curves and it reveals a little cleavage. It has just a hint of sex appeal. No need to be overly sexy.
